Hawthornes Scarlet Letter - Rev. Arthur Dimmesdale and the Scaffold Scenes :: Scarlet Letter essays

The Scarlet Letter   - Dimmesdale and the Scaffold Scenes In Nathaniel Hawthorne's "The Scarlet Letter," there are three very important scenes that all take place at the town scaffold, a place of great shame in their strict Puritan society. These scenes represent the progression of Reverend Arthur Dimmesdale over the course of the story. Each scene involves him in some way and one can easily see that he has changed dramatically in all three. The first scaffold scene takes place in the very beginning of the story. Hester Prynne, a woman who has committed adultery and will not name the father of her child, is forced to stand upon the scaffold in shame for three hours in front of a crowd of people. Dimmesdale, who is later revealed as the father, openly denies his sin and even goes as far as telling Hester to "speak out the name of thy fellow-sinner and fellow-sufferer," in order to make sure that nobody suspects him. While the author doesn't make his guilt very obvious, he does give a few hints that suggest Dimmesdale does have some sort of hidden secret. In this scene, the Reverend shows his original strength of character, which he slowly loses over the course of the story. Seven years later, in the middle of the night, Dimmesdale finally admits to his sin while standing on the scaffold, just as Hester did so very long ago. It has been eating away at him all this time and feels that he also must be punished, though he cannot bring himself to confess publicly. He even brands his chest with the same letter "A" that Hester has been forced to wear upon her clothing to show that she is an adulterer. In the third and final scaffold scene, Dimmesdale finally reveals his secret to the public. And as "Pearl kissed his lips...a spell was broken," Dimmesdale conquers his guilt and dies right there on the scaffold with an open conscience. He also escapes

Lesson Review Essay

1. Why would killing Lucy, Mina, or any other vampire have been considered a merciful act of euthanasia? They are becoming monsters and they wouldn’t want to hurt anyone. By killing them, you are putting them out of their misery. Euthanasia is merciful killing. By killing a vampire, you are not only preventing them being miserable because of what they become and preventing their future victims from misery. 2. Explain the difference between physiognomy and phrenology. Physiognomy is the practice of determining a persons characteristics by their facial structure. Phrenology is the practice of determining a persons characteristics based on the amount of space they have in certain parts of their brain. 3. How does the poem â€Å"Totentanz† represent the recurring theme in Goethe’s works, that mankind should not meddle with the activities of the supernatural? (What happens to the man in the poem?) The warder picks up one of the skeletons shrouds and so that skeleton does not go back in the grave like the others. The skeleton chases him up to the bell tower and just as he was about to kill him, god saved the warder. The skeleton crashes down into pieces. 4. Which vampire hunter has died during the mission to kill the Count? How do Jonathan and Mina honor this deceased character? Quincy was very injured and died. He lived long enough to see Dracula live, though. Jonathan and Mina honors Quincys death by naming their son Quincy. 5. What do you think a man should look like, sound like, and behave like if he is going to play the role of Count Dracula in a film or a play? I think that his voice has to be smooth, soothing, and very seducing. His hair has to be black and be in great contrast to pale skin. The eyes are very Important. They have to be piercing yet beautiful. He must behave sly yet be very polite. In order to play the role of Dracula, the person has to have a lot of contradicting characteristics.

A Critique of Chinua Achebe’s “An Image of Africa” Essay

â€Å"Certainly Conrad appears to go to considerable pains to set up layers of insulation between himself and the moral universe of his history. He has, for example, a narrator behind a narrator. The primary narrator is Marlow but his account is given to us through the filter of a second, shadowy person. But if Conrad’s intention is to draw a cordon sanitaire between himself and the moral and psychological malaise of his narrator his care seems to me totally wasted because he neglects to hint however subtly or tentatively at an alternative frame of reference by which we may judge the actions and opinions of his characters.† Although Achebe recognizes Conrad’s use of multiple narrators, he dismisses any intention on Conrad’s part of utilizing the narrators to introduce psychological depth in Heart of Darkness. I believe, however, that Conrad’s full objective was to establish a moral and existential tone in his novella; he accomplished this by incorpo rating a second narrator. Conrad introduces the narrator and his surrounding characters as they navigate the Thames River. As the narrator describes Marlow and the other Seamen the reader begins to question where Marlow stands in this social hierarchy. Conrad thus establishes a tone of uncertainty in the credibility and morality of both Marlow and the narrator. The entire novella is a retelling of Marlow’s tales in Africa, years after they had occurred, which leaves the extent of Marlow’s exaggeration and embellishment of his story up for question. 2. Disagree â€Å"Joseph Conrad was a thoroughgoing racist. That this simple truth is glossed over in criticisms of his work is due to the fact that white racism against Africa is such a normal way of thinking that its manifestations go completely unremarked† Achebe is not reading Conrad’s work on a symbolic level rather he superficially judges parts of the novella as racist. The novella Heart of Darkness is not a racial slur, nor is it an insulting depiction of the people of Africa in any way. It is an examination of the false pretenses the Europeans held over their assumed benevolent work in Africa. The purpose of Marlow’s story was to show the adverse effects of imperialism on white European tradesmen. Conrad is thus in no way a racist, as he set out to depict the malice of Europeans during this time period. He uses his experiences in the Congo during King Leopold of Belgium’s tyranny to show the malevolence greed instills in mankind. 3. Disagree â€Å"Africa as a metaphysical battlefield devoid of all recognizable humanity, into which the wandering European enters at his peril. . . . . Can nobody see the preposterous and perverse arrogance in thus reducing Africa to the role of props for the break-up of one petty European mind? But that is not even the point. The real question is the dehumanization of Africa and Africans which this age-long attitude has fostered and continues to foster in the world. And the question is whether a novel which celebrates this dehumanization, which depersonalizes a portion of the human race, can be called a great work of art.† Conrad’s Heart of Darkness is a great work of art; is it a symbolic delineation of Western covetousness and the effects materialism has on mankind. Africa is not meant to be â€Å"devoid of all recognizable humanity.† Africa is a setting which could be moved anywhere white Europeans use phony moral objectives to carry out their greed. The novella is not specific to Africa but, is a representation of the degradation of man when he works on fake moral grounds. It is for that very reason that Conrad begins his novella with Marlow’s recount of man’s historical occupations -including Roman and British sieges- and the darkness that follows all acts of greed. 4. Disagree Unfortunately his heart of darkness plagues us still. Which is why an offensive and deplorable book can be described by a serious scholar as â€Å"among the half dozen greatest short novels in the English language.† Although Achebe’s defensive view is reasonable as he is of African descent and feels affronted by the opinion he believes Conrad holds, he misses the overall meaning of the novella. Conrad’s Heart of Darkness is not a plague, nor should it be regretted. This novella gave insight into the shameful acts committed by Europeans in search of fame and fortune. Heart of Darkness is not a slander on the African people; it is the exposure of European cruelty and man’s madness derived from greed and feeling empowered over another. 5. Disagree â€Å"I am talking about a book which parades in the most vulgar fashion prejudices and insults from which a section of mankind has suffered untold agonies and atrocities in the past and continues to do so in many ways and many places today. I am talking about a story in which the very humanity of black people is called in question.† Humanity is questioned in Heart of Darkness but, Achebe fails to realize Conrad’s intention. Achebe focuses primarily on the depiction of the Africans in this novella and disregards the contempt Conrad holds for the imperialists. Conrad’s objective was to unmask the â€Å"prejudices and insults from which a section of mankind has suffered untold agonies and atrocities† but, not in the â€Å"vulgar fashion† Achebe describes. The humanity of Europeans is instead called in question. Conrad had witnessed firsthand how the Europeans pillaged and devastated African communities and used his experiences to illustrate the obscen ity of imperialism. 6. Disagree â€Å"As a sensible man I will not accept just any traveler’s tales solely on the grounds that I have not made the journey myself. I will not trust the evidence even off man’s very eyes when I suspect them to be as jaundiced as Conrad’s. And we also happen to know that Conrad was, in the words of his biographer, Bernard C. Meyer, â€Å"notoriously inaccurate in the rendering of his own history.† In fiction it is often the author’s idiosyncratic perspective that makes a story intriguing. Factual recounting does not arrive in a fictional book. Whether Conrad’s portrayal of imperialism in Africa was entirely accurate or an embellished version of his own existential struggles, Heart of Darkness was a landmark piece for his time period. The atrocities committed during European imperialism were not a subject of conversation but, Conrad helped to bring the issues to the surface. Conrad did not aim to offend the people of Africa; he intended to expo se the Europeans of their veiled immorality.

Love Letter to Her

From the moment I heard your voice I felt a connection to your soul. I can still remember exactly how you looked the day we first met. Your beautiful eyes captured my heart and your smile erased any and all doubts that I had ever experienced. When you opened your arms I stepped into your loving, kind embrace and knew that I was â€Å"home† right where I had always belonged. You knew just the words to say to put me at ease and when your hand reached out to hold mine, I realized that I had found my future, my soul-mate and the love that I had always dreamed of discovering. We spoke for hours about every possible subject and never ran out of words to say to each other. I could see the longing and passion in your eyes and I am sure that it was a reflection of the incredibly intense desire that I was feeling at the same moment. The world had ceased to exist and there were only the two of us sitting next to each other, holding hands and experiencing emotions that we had never felt be fore. When you first whispered the words, â€Å"I love you,† into my ear as we walked towards your room, it was the happiest moment in my life. My joy was deeper, richer and more intense than I had ever dreamed possible.I can remember the tears in my eyes as I turned to look at you. The kiss we shared that night was one I shall never forget. Having to tell you â€Å"Good Night† and return home without you was the hardest thing that I have ever had to do in my life. Even knowing that you would call me on the phone later to wish me goodnight once more made our parting no easier to bear. The moments when we were apart seemed like a bitter eternity and I could barely wait until the next time I would see you or talk to you. Never have distances seemed so long and cold and lonely. Our phone conversations would often have long moments where the two of us just held the phone to our ears and took comfort from the sound of the other's soft breathing. You are the only person that could cause my heart to skip a beat with just a sidelong glance or a gentle smile. I gaze into your eyes and lose track of where I am, and even who I am. Your voice stirs a deeply intense longing in every fiber of my body and your caress makes me feel as though I am melting inside. These are feelings that I never knew existed and now I never want to lose these feelings, not even for a moment.Ever since you came into my life I have known what true love and desire really are and these are emotions that many people will never know. You appear to me in my dreams and even these imaginary kisses rock my world and thrill me to the very core of my being. I can barely wait until the night is here, when I can lie in bed and dream of you once more. I want nothing more than to spend my life with you at my side. When I wake in the morning I want to find you there beside me. When I go to sleep at night I want to feel your arms holding me, protecting me from the world. You are the one true love of my life and I am only sorry that it took us so many years to meet. Now that we have found each other and are making a life together I will never again know the empty feelings of loneliness. You have made my life complete and I shall cherish your incredible gift of unconditional love and devotion until the moment that my body takes its last breath on this Earth. I love you, my babygirl No matter what the future holds for us I will love you until the end of time, and beyond. These words are my promise to never take you for granted or doubt the love that binds us for now and all eternity.

Code of ethics on Work Essay

A. Develop an applicable standards and procedures section that includes four elements of acceptable or unacceptable behavior found in a code of ethics. Acceptable Standards 1.Integrity- We will always do what we say and say what we do. We must always be consistent, credible and act with integrity. Employee’s actions should maintain high integrity in all activity related to this organization. 2.Diversity- Our culture is based on mutual respect and we value the differences that each employee brings to their position. Employees will treat others with respect and should build an environment of mutual respect. Employee differences and disagreements should always be handled peacefully and professionally. Employees will respect cultural and racial differences and work support an environment where all employees are respected for their contributions. 3.Open Communication- If you have questions, concerns or complaints, you are encouraged to talk to your manager. We value you as an employee and want to ensure that each employee’s working environment is pleasant, productive and that your feedback is heard and acted upon. Should you prefer to speak to someone other than your manager, you can contact your Ombudsman at any time. 4.Accountability- Employees will take accountability for their actions and contributions to the business and should hold each other accountable for maintaining ethical behavior that is in line with our code of ethics. B. Develop a section that identifies at least three specific elements for an ethics training program. Ethics Training Program 1.Departmental Training- We require all departments to provide regular training to ensure understanding and awareness of corporate standards related to ethical decision making. Training should be focused on employee awareness of ethical standards and understanding and use of resources for  employees. These departmental training sessions will be manager or peer led sessions and will be done on a quarterly basis. 2.Annual Company Wide Training- We will require annual ethics training and certification for all employees. The training is required to be completed annually and will be mandatory to all employees. Manager bonus programs will be dependent on department/team participation. 3.Managerial Training- Managers will be required to be certified annually to show understanding and alignment with our existing ethics programs and any ongoing changes to the program. C. Develop a section that explains the processes for each of the following: 1. Monitoring employee misconduct 2. Auditing employee misconduct 3. Reporting employee misconduct Employee Misconduct Managers will be required to monitor employee conduct in several ways, including regular interaction, performance reviews and evaluation of quarterly surveys. Regular interaction with the team will ensure that managers are engaged in the over-sight of their department and able to interact and coach employees before issues escalate. Quarterly survey results will be used monitor employee conduct and behavior. These surveys will help to identify possible team issues and allow employees to share anonymous feedback on a regular basis. Surveys also give the employees the ability provide feedback on the department, manager or any issues that may be taking place as well as to leverage or engage human resources. Performance reviews will be used to coach through behavioral issues, including ethical issues as well as to monitor the professional growth, contribution and alignment with corporate and ethical goals. Executives will oversee the managers and will work to identify issues/conflict in their department through quarterly skip level interviews, anonymous reporting options, and access to cross segment feedback on individuals. Both Managers and Executives will be supported by corporate HR which will also have visibility and oversight into the employee feedback shared through various anonymous feedback sources. The Human resource  department should constantly look for early signs of ethical conflict with corporate standards with the goal of supporting a healthy environment. Both the HR department and the executive team shall have cross segment visibility and oversight into employee behavior with the goal of identifying risks to the corporate culture and standards. Auditing Employee Conduct Employee conduct will be audited via several means including but not limited to surveys, coaching, web training, employee performance reviews and anonymous reporting options. This will ensure corporate visibility and oversight into the adherence of employees to our ethical standards. These mechanisms will have a weighted score attached to the result as follows: †¢Quarterly Survey’s 15% †¢Managerial Coaching 30% †¢Web Training 15% †¢Employee performance review 30% †¢Anonymous reporting results 10% Web training and surveys will be tailored to gather specific data based on corporate priorities at the time of these actions. Managerial coaching sessions, employee performance reviews, and anonymous reporting will be used to audit employee support and adherence to our ethics program. Audit scoring will be on a 1 to10 point scale. The Human Resource department will compile the results and produce an enterprise wide report which shall be released quarterly. Departments that do not meet the standard of 90% or higher will need to create a plan of action. Managers, directors, and a representative of human resource will create a plan of action along with a timeline for remediation and this will be managed by the HR department. In addition, an outside auditor must review the ethics program annually to confirm that ethical standards are being followed and maintained as expected. Reporting Employee Misconduct All employees will have access to a corporate website, toll free phone number and an ombudsman that employees should use to report misconduct or  violations of the corporate ethics policy. In addition, managers may use all other corporate communication tools such as email, instant messenger or phone conversations to gain visibility to and to report misconduct. D. Develop a section that explains your plan to do the following: 1. Evaluate the effectiveness of the ethics program after implementation. 2. Provide suggestions to improve the ethics program after implementation. Ongoing Evaluation of our Ethics program During our annual third party audit, the auditing company will review the overall effectiveness of our ethics program to show annual performance trending from the previous year as well as a comparison to industry results. Upon completion of the third party evaluation, we will use the information to identify strengths and opportunities in our corporate ethics program which will be used to build the following years plan metrics and priorities. Ongoing Improvement of our Ethics Program We are a pay for performance organization and as such, Executive bonus plans will be tied to successful achievement of our corporate, ethical standards. Ten to thirty percent of Executive bonus plans will be paid at a multiplier of (2X) as long as the third party assessment shows 90% or greater achievement of corporate ethics targets. In addition, we will provide company wide, quarterly reports to share our performance with the employees and we will adjust key manager incentives to ensure alignment of departmental ethics goals to company goals.

Journal entry - Essay Example During this exercise I managed to make an observation practice that regards evidence bias on hygiene among care providers. Later on I had a conversation with my preceptor regarding hygiene among care providers (Rutledge, 2011). My preceptor prepared me for the need to ensure hygiene in health institutions to reduce infections. My preceptor also gave me information regarding departments that ensure hand hygiene and how important it is. Hand hygiene helps to reduce hospital acquired infection. A meeting where I participated was held to discuss ways to sustain hand washing program. At the meeting, it was suggested that, to ensure hygiene, hand washing materials have to be availed to the employees in every department (Beauchesne, 2010). I then presented my practicum manual to the preceptor. The preceptor explained her role in this exercise and also asked me to let her know of my goals expectations in the next meeting. I engaged with the personnel from infection control department to evaluate the need of hand washing exercise to maintain hygiene in all the departments. I then had a meeting with my preceptor where we had a discussion on the following: the last weeks’ assignment, how we can work together with my preceptor to achieve the set objectives for the for the practicum experience.
